The main technological advancements during World War II were the atomic bomb, jet aircraft, Asdic (sonar), radar, and the first computer. There are many others, however one of the advancements that has the greatest impact on our world today would be the atomic bomb/nuclear energy. The nuclear bomb is what helped end the war because it scared Japan into surrendering to the United Staes. We currently use nuclear energy around the world to produce a huge amount of energy. Nuclear bombs impact our world greatly today as well. Now many countries have nuclear bombs other than the U.S.A which is not good in cases like the the Cold War. Although World War II was tragic and many lives were lost, we now benefit from many of the technological advancements that were made for the original purpose of warfare. For example, jet engines now help us travel around the world quickly. Overall, many different technological advancements have been very useful in World War II and have even provided our world today with valuable technologies.

It consisted of the largest amphibious assault to take place at the time The most significant turning point for the Allies in World War II in my opinion was D-Day during Operation Overlord. It consisted of the largest amphibious assault to take place at the time and the Allies had opened a second front against the Germans in France. This historical day in 1944 consisted of many deaths on the beaches of Utah, Omaha, Juno, Sword and Gold. The amphibious landing of Allied troops on the coast of France and the airborne troops played a large part in this battle. Rommel believed that whoever won the beaches that day would win the war. The fight on the beaches of Normandy was a major turning point because it was the start of an Allied campaign in western Europe.
another significant turning point for the Allies in WWII was when they defeated Germany in the battle of Stalingrad. The battle for the city turned into one of the most brutal in World War Two. The reason this is the most significant turning point is because they took Germanys power. During the battle 91,000 Germans were taken prisoner. Due to loosing so many men and equipment, the Germans therefore did not have enough manpower to cope with the Russians. Germany was then defeated. Once Germany was defeated the Allies became stronger. This quote was said during his speech which was called 'We shall fight on the beaches". It refers to when the French, British and Belgian troops were surrounded in Dunkirk on the beach harbor. "Wars are not won on evacuation" has a double meaning because although the evacuation at Dunkirk was seen as a small victory they ultimately lost france. Winston Churchill's War time speech was really saying that all though the evacuation was a good thing they could not win the war if they were retreating. Wars aren't really won by having people evacuated or fleeing the war zone because the other side would just win by default and there wouldn't actually be a true feeling of accomplishment. At Dunkirk, the British were surrounded and the navy was given the order to leave. But when the British evacuated, they rescued 340,000 troops. Rescuing that many troops could be considered a victory but 'fleeing the scene' most definitely wouldn't. Churchill was not saying that you need to stay and fight or win or die like Stalin in Communist Russia, he was just saying that although we may have gotten those soldiers out they still needed to throw them back into the fight. Although Churchill did agree it was a success he knew that it would not help to end the war.
Saving Private Ryan is a very interesting and sad movie that is very well known. I have watched it once before when I was younger and I believe that this time when I watched it, I understood it more and it made me understand what war is actually like. I see this central idea of making this movie of wars destructive quality. It is terrible to see so many young men fighting for their country and then lose everything they ever had.
The movie is about a private named Ryan who's brothers were killed and he was the last one left. There is a rule in war that if there is only one family member left fighting in the war, he is to be found and sent home to his family. Near the middle of the movie, they found Ryan but he refused to go home. He wanted to fight for his country and if he died then he died a proud man. In the end, Ryan survived but the main man who went to search for him in the beginning, died. Overall, the movie is amazing and everyone should watch it so people can really appreciate everything that the men and woman are sacrificing in their lives. |
