- Americans begins a process called Island hopping, where they would take major islands in the Pacific and left the smaller Japanese islands to wither on the vine. Some of the Japanese soldiers left on these islands thought the war continued into the 1970s.
- Battle of Leyte Gulf, Japanese begin to realize they are losing the war and begin Kamikaze attacks.

Island Hopping” is the phrase given to the strategy employed by the United States to gain military bases and secure the many small islands in the Pacific. The attack was lead by General Douglas MacArthur, Commander of the Allied forces in the South west Pacific, and Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-chief of the Pacific fleet.
