Life is Beautiful, a movie by Roberto Benigni, takes place in Italy, 1939. It is about a Jewish Italian book shop owner, Guido Orefice, who is seized, along with his son, Joshua, and brought to a concentration camp. His wife, Dora, demands to go to the concentration camp to be with her family, even though she is not a Jew. Guido masks the horrors of the Nazi concentration camp from his son as he tells him that it is just a game. Guido sacrifices himself everyday to keep his son alive and fed, eventually sacrificing his life to spare his son's.The morning after, Joshua is reunited with Dora.
I found this movie to be overall confusing. I could see how this movie was comedic but there were many times when I wanted to put Guido in his place. I felt very guilty after he was killed. This movie also shows the love that parents have for their children as they don't want them to be exposed to the real world just yet and do whatever it takes to hide away the pain and suffering from them. However, I did like, in particular, the scene where Guido was carrying the dormant Joshua and they come across the pile of bodies that were in the gas chambers.
