During 1945-1950, the United States refused the spread of communism. Harry Truman introduced the Truman Doctrine which was a plan to give 400 million dollars to Greece and Turkey. The effect was to end the Communist threat, and in 1952 both countries (Greece and Turkey) joined NATO, a military alliance that guaranteed their protection. This led to The Marshall Plan was similar but allowed countries to apply for the money to rebuild their countries. Sixteen nations applied, even countries who were neutral in the war. This helped keep the countries democratic and would show countries who were communist that democracy could supply the life that was always wanted and that communism would never be able to supply. In their behalf of Berlin, the US stood by this plan. The Russians cut off their train route so the US couldn't get supplies to their half of Berlin. Giving up Berlin was one of their few options. They stood but their plan and flew supplies by aircraft.
